China Risks, China Challenges - David Morris
Thursday 12 September at 6.00pm
Manning Clark House, Tasmania Circle, Forrest
We appear to be in a perfect storm of seismic shifts in the international order, in geopolitics and the world economy, at the same time as transformational changes in technology and an unfolding climate crisis. China is at the centre of each of these major challenges.
China’s economy is now at a scale that anything that happens in China affects the world, and the world’s second largest economy faces a host of imbalances and problems of transition from developing to developed economy.
Understanding China has become more important than ever. Developing strategies to ensure all sides benefit from interdependence with China has become critical, when the alternative seems to be confrontation and conflict.
David Morris has had an international career as diplomat, adviser to governments, businesses and the United Nations. He represented the Pacific Islands Forum in China at a time of escalating tension between Australia and China, and recently completed a PhD on China risks and managing interdependence, while researching China’s Belt and Road Initiative as part of an EU-funded Erasmus + Jean Monnet Research Network. David is a Senior Fellow at the Center for China and Globalization, and a Senior Research Fellow, Beijing Foreign Studies University.
There will be a Q&A session following the presentation, then light refreshments.
