Our Director Being Displayed in Melbourne Photographic Exhibition

Judith’s photographic work is currently being exhibited in Melbourne. To see a wider range of her photographs click on ‘Gallery’ and go to the area marked ‘Director’s Photos’. Below is an excerpt referring to the work (JH Web Maintainer)

Märchen’ (fairytales) is a series of eight hybrid artworks comprised of digital and analog photographs, digital and hand painting, and original poems inked by hand with traditional Japanese squirrel hair-brushes. The series combines images from Teutonic fairytales with poetry inspired by the cold-war experiences of Irene, an 80 year old Berlin woman. Irene was my neighbour in Germany and became a close friend. Over numerous cups of tea she told me stories from her life: love affairs, the terrors and sadness of the Berlin wall, her personal struggle with national guilt … and the fairytales she was told as a child. In these works myth and history are woven into the fabric of Irene’s memories. The memories of a poetic and beautiful Frau.

The images from ‘Märchen’ are the first in Australia to be produced on hand-made Japanese ‘Gampi’ paper, a plant-based paper whose silk-like sheen is created with rice milk. Michael Silver, a master-printer from Melbourne’s Photonet Gallery, printed the works and has now become the main distributor in Australia of ‘Washi’ paper, the generic name for Japanese hand-made papers.

‘Märchen’ is hanging at the Brunswick Street Gallery until February 3rd. A book of the images and poems is currently in production and will be available by mid-year.
